Potato Peas Star Tikki Recipe – The perfect patty for anytime burger !

This is a quick recipe I used from time to time when my kids would clamor for something interesting to eat. Over the years our family has grown quite fond of this Potato Peas Star Tikki Recipe. It’s the perfect item that fits the bill of “Taste bhi Aur Health Bhi” (Both tasty and healthy).

It can be a side dish, a snack or even main course depending on how you use it. This can be had with a dip of your choice. You can also use the patty in sandwiches. If you make the patty big even a burger. So, you see sky is the limit 😉

Depending on your diet you can use the recipe to make other animal protein based tikkis/pattys also. Just replace the peas with item of your choice.

Potato Peas Tikki

You can replace the Peas with other ingredients as well as per your diet.

Ingredients
  • 3 medium aloo/potatoes medium size
  • ½ cup fresh peas
  • ½ cup Poha / flattened rice
  • ½ cup fresh coriander/ cilantro
  • Red chilli powder as per taste
  • 1 tbsp dhaniya/coriander powder
  • 2 green chillies chopped
  • 1 tbsp grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp corn flour Corn flour
  • ½ tsp Salt or as per taste
  • A pinch of Hing/ Asafoetida
  • ¾ tsp Chat Masala
  • Oil for frying
Directions
  • Step 1 Boil the potatoes. Peel and mash when cooled.
  • Step 2 Grind the Poha to powder in the grinding jar.
  • Step 3 Mix the powdered poha, mashed potato, chili powder, dhania/coriander powder, ginger and salt to taste in a mixing bowl and mix well and knead them to a smooth dough.
  • Step 4 Cover and keep it aside for 10 minutes.
  • Step 5 Meanwhile grind peas, green chilli, fresh coriander in a mixer in to a coarse mixture at pulse mode.
  • Step 6 Roast this mixture for two minutes in a fry pan with little oil, chilli powder, chat masala and the hing. Keep aside for cooling.
  • Step 7 Make medium size 12-14 equal sized balls of potato mixture and flatten each ball in to about 5 mm thick and 3 inches in diameter round Pattys and keep all of them separately on a plate.
  • Step 8 The size of patty should be bigger than the cookie cutter mould you like to use for the shape of Tikki you wish to make.
  • Step 9 Mix corn flour in little water to be used for sticking the potato patties.
  • Step 10 Now cut the potato pattys in a desired shape using the cookie cutter.
  • Step 11 Make a sandwich of two potato pattys with peas mixture in between. Use corn flour on the edges to stick and cement it. Description –> Put a spoonful of peas mixture on one potato roti, apply corn flour paste on its periphery and place other roti on top of it. Press it by tapping it so that both sides stick with each other properly. Make all tikkies in similar way and keep aside.
  • Step 12 Heat oil in a fry pan and shallow fry the tikkies on medium flame till golden brown on both sides.
  • Step 13 Serve with green chatani /ketchup/hummus/coconut chutney or a dip of your choice.

 

Potato Peas Star Recipe in pictures

There your fancy galactic tikkis are ready. This is quick and easy to make. However, it looks esoteric enough to impress your guests. As mentioned above you can replace the peas fillings with anything of your choice. Thus, you could probably make the same snack with three different fillings and you would actually have three different dishes.

The best way to feed veggies to kids is to mix it with something. Something that is chewy and is taste neutral. That way its possible to give the mixer any flavor of your choice. The kids then enjoy the flavored chew-able object while the veggies just sneak in like ninjas. This object can be any root-based item like potatoes, tapioca, colocasia root etc. If the diet includes animal proteins then meat can also be a good mixer. Today i have a Bhindi Recipe for you based on this insight.

One of my favorites, which my mom used to prepare to sneak veggies into me when I was a kid was Potatoes. In fact, even today I don’t particularly enjoy eating just veggies. I prefer to mix it to make it more palatable. After all, eating tasty is just as important as eating healthy.

Okra is one of the healthiest greens a human can consume. Apart from the fact that’s its literally a powerhouse of fiber. It is also a nutritious food with many health benefits. It’s rich in magnesium, folate, antioxidants, and vitamin C, K1, and A. It is beneficial to pregnant women. Its also good for heart health and blood sugar control. It may even have anticancer properties.

While some may develop a taste for it, I could never manage to develop a taste for greens as such. Many of my friends ask me why I am so picky about taste since I am a vegetarian. I don’t really know how to react to that so I tell them irrespective of dietary choices, the need for good food is a need for good food . So,today I have created a Okra dish mixed in with some nicely sautéed potatoes.

Bhindi Okra Recipe

You can adjust the taste to make it more spicy or less spicy. You can also add green chili or capsicum to add to the flavor. You can enjoy the dish as is or you can use it as sandwich fillings with soy cheese to make it yum. If you have a non-vegan diet you can also use ghee (clarified butter) or butter instead of oil.

  • 1.5 cups chopped Okra.
  • 1 cup chopped Potatoes
  • 1 big onion chopped
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Red chili Powder to taste
  • 1 tbsp Coriander/Dhaniya powder.
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ tsp sugar – Optional
Directions
  • Step 1 Heat a pan over high flame. Add a tablespoon of oil.
  • Step 2 Add the potatoes, sautée them nicely and set aside.
  • Step 3 Wipe the pan and add a tablespoon of oil and heat.
  • Step 4 Add the cumin seeds, stir for 10-15 secs.
  • Step 5 Add the red chili powder and turmeric powder, stir 10 secs.
  • Step 6 Add the onion. Fry till it becomes translucent or pink.
  • Step 7 Add the potatoes. Fry them for a few secs.
  • Step 8 Add the Okra and mix well for a few secs.
  • Step 9 Sprinkle the coriander powder on top.
  • Step 10 Sprinkle the salt.
  • Step 11 Add the sugar – Optional
  • Step 12 Mix well and fry them for a few mins until they are well done.
  • Step 13 You can optionally add a spoon of oil and mix it nicely. This will add to the crunchy taste but It will also add to the calories 😊
  • Step 14 Fry for a couple of mins. Serve hot in a dish.

Tips

Mix well and fry them for a few mins until they are well done.

There your ninja lady’s fingers are ready. They will use stealth to enter the oesophagus of a human and carry out their mission which is to create massive nutrition in the body. Or atleast that’s what you can tell the young ones in the house!

This can be had as a snack or can be a healthy and tasty side dish for a meal. It’s also a healthy dinner or late-night snack. The plethora of fiber ensures that you have a pleasant experience in the morning. In fact, its probably a great way to replace our diet if we cannot atleast replace our habits.
